New Documentary Airs on April 21 on Public Television
Portrays a family's struggle to heal their son from autism.
The documentary “Beautiful Son” airing on April 21 (check local listings for times) explores the complex and sometimes controversial world of autism through one family's quest to heal their child. In 2003, Hawaii filmmakers Don and Julianne King realized something was wrong with their 3-year-old son, Beau. Around age 2 1/2, Beau started losing his speaking ability and coordination, and was becoming disconnected from the outside world.
Determined to help Beau, his parents brought him to the best doctors in the U.S. and took along a video camera to document the results. Two months later, Beau was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.
In “Beautiful Son,” the filmmakers take us on their journey as they attempt to recover Beau from autism. Along the way, Don and Julianne come to believe that the medical establishment has little to offer. Desperate to find help, they stumble upon a community of doctors and parents who are experimenting with alternative treatments and who they believe are successfully recovering some kids from autism.
“Beautiful Son” is the story of a disorder reaching epidemic proportion. It’s the story of a grassroots movement of parents and doctors who believe that environmental toxins may be triggering some forms of autism and demanding that research be done to help their children.
